Proverbs of Solomon

“Solomon is the author of literally thousands of proverbs.  The proverbs are short poems, usually in the form of couplets, which set high ethical standards and give practical advice for daily living through the use of comparative or perhaps antithetical, imagery.

Such poetic verses place high value on wisdom and sharply contrast good and evil, righteousness and wickedness, justice and injustice.  The Hebrew proverbs are distinct in that all wisdom is seen as flowing from the true God, rather than being a mere accumulation of human observation and experience.

To facilitate understanding, the proverbs and wise sayings are presented here under appropriate topic headings.  By seeing the individual proverbs in the context of others dealing with the same subject, one can gain a richer appreciation for ‘the wisdom that comes from heaven.'”

SOLOMON’S PERSONAL PLEA     Proverbs 4

All quotations taken from The Daily Bible.

Construction of Cities and Royal Palace

“The royal palace for Solomon requires six more years to complete than the temple itself, and it’s building program includes the construction or repair of many cities throughout his kingdom, a task accomplished through the use of forced labor by captives living within the country.”

Read: 1 Kings 7:1-12, 1 Kings 9, 2 Chronicles 7:11-22, 2 Chronicles 8

Extent of Solomon’s Glory

“Over the years of Solomon’s reign, God’s promise to Solomon, to give wisdom beyond all men and untold riches, has become reality.  Solomon’s kingdom has developed into the most peaceful and prosperous kingdom ever known.  Solomon’s glory is documented not only by official statistics but also by the visit of the Queen of Sheba.  What motivates her to come so great a distance is far more than mere curiosity at Solomon’s wealth.  It is the search for wisdom and insight which compels her, and she is not in the least disappointed.”

Read: 1 Kings 4, 1 Kings 10, 2 Chronicles 1:14-17, 2 Chronicles 9, Psalm 71:1-19

All quotations taken from The Daily Bible.

Dedication of the Temple

“Solomon brings the people together for a solemn dedication of the temple to God’s use and glory.  Solomon reminds his people of the covenant relationship signified by the temple, and thus of their obligation to remain faithful to God.  As the dedication begins, the old tabernacle is brought to the temple site.”

Read: 1 Kings 8, 2 Chronicles 5, 2 Chronicles 6, 2 Chronicles 7:1-10

All quotations taken from The Daily Bible.

Building of the Temple

“Perhaps Solomon’s best-known achievement is the building of the magnificent temple in Jerusalem.  A temple unsurpassed in beauty, it would become a national monument symbolic of Israel’s special relationship with God.  King David had drawn up the initial plans, and it is now left to Solomon to oversee the construction.  The detail with which the temple is described is reminiscent of that which accompanied the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness.

Much of the work is to be done with materials provided by the skilled workmen from Tyre.”

Read: 1 Kings 5, 2 Chronicles 2, 1 Kings 6, 2 Chronicles 3, 1 Kings 7, 2 Chronicles 4, 2 Chronicles 5:1, 1 Kings 9:25/2 Chronicles 8:12-16

All quotations taken from The Daily Bible.
