Sending Out Apostles

“After his second rejection in his hometown of Nazareth, Jesus gains renewed encouragement as he is met by crowds in other parts of Galilee.  Jesus calls for those who are willing to work among the multitudes for the sake of his kingdom.  The time is especially appropriate, then, for sending out the 12 apostles on a special mission of teaching and performing miracles with the power he gives them.  He warns them that they, like all who would work in the Lord’s name, will be persecuted and will face the need for sacrifice.

Interestingly, Jesus does not appear to place particular emphasis on organization, methods of evangelism, or academic religious training.  The 12 apostles are mostly of simple education, but the power of Christ is with them.”

Performing Miracles

“It is one thing for a man to teach what he claims is truth; it is quite another thing to demonstrate one’s authority to claim that truth.  That is why the miracles which Jesus performs are such a vital part of his ministry.

The miracles are a means of confirming the message that the kingdom  of God is now being established with power!  God is establishing his rule through Christ, and proving it with the miraculous power which Jesus exercises over the forces of nature, over the spirit world, and over death and disease.”

The Rise of Opposition

“By indicating that he has the divine authority to forgive sins, Jesus naturally arouses immediate reaction from the Scribes and Pharisees.  Since they correctly believe that only God can forgive sins, they reject the possibility that Jesus himself is divine and conclude instead that he is guilty of blasphemy.

In addition to the written law given through Moses, the Pharisees accept as equally binding the oral traditions of the rabbis, which traditions have evolved into a highly ritualistic set of religious observances.  So when Jesus and his disciples violate some of these traditional rules, the Pharisees are highly offended.

Despite growing opposition, Jesus continues to go about teaching and performing miracles, yet almost consciously without fanfare.  As if to underscore the urgency of his mission in the face of opposition, Jesus appoints 12 of his disciples as specially chosen apostles to aid him in his ministry.  With their added support, Jesus continues to attract even greater crowds from among the common people.”

Beginning of the Great Galilean Ministry

“Rejected by those closest to him in Nazareth, Jesus takes his ministry elsewhere.  Surprisingly, though, it is not to Jerusalem and surrounding Judea that Jesus goes.  Contrary to the expectation of the Jews, Jesus takes his ministry primarily to Galilee.  It is here that Jesus gains popularity among the people and begins to see the crowds swell.  Matthew begins his account of the Galilean ministry by observing that this phase of Jesus’ ministry is a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy.”
