The Perean Ministry

“When Jesus goes into the area beyond the Jordan River, he enters the Perean province ruled by the tetrarch Herod Antipas, the same Herod who had earlier beheaded John the Baptist.  Jesus does not fear Herod, however, because he knows that his end will come only in Jerusalem.  It is unclear whether a warning about Herod comes from Pharisees who really believe in Jesus or whether they are simply trying to get Jesus to leave their area.

Jesus once again teaches through numerous parables covering a wide range of subjects including the cost of discipleship, the value of lost souls, the rejection of his kingdom, the need for humility, and the unrighteousness of hypocritical religion.”

Ministry from Galilee to Judea

“Jesus returns to Capernaum after the Festival of Dedication, for the final two months of his Galilean ministry.  He not only feels growing opposition from the people there who want a political leader, but also knows that it is nearing the time for him to be delivered up.  From this time forward, Jesus resolutely faces his final suffering.

Initial excitement among the masses is followed by doubt and even hostility as Jesus refuses to accept the role that most people want him to play.  In a way it is characteristic of the turnabout which inevitably comes when people accept Jesus into their lives for any number of wrong reasons: the excitement can give way to disappointment.”

In Jerusalem for Festival of Dedication

“Jesus is in Jerusalem in December during the eight-day Festival of Dedication, known more modernly as Hanukkah.  Faithful Jews are gathering in Jerusalem in order to celebrate the rededication of the temple, and Jesus takes this opportunity to reach out to the large number of people present.

When various Jewish leaders ask Jesus whether he is the Christ, he reminds them of his miraculous works as proof of his deity.  he then says that he and the Father are one, thereby infuriating the Jews, who see this as rank blasphemy.  They take up rocks to stone Jesus and try to have him arrested, but Jesus escapes.”

Preparation of Apostles for the End

“Jesus prepares his chosen disciples for his death and to strengthen their ministry in carrying on his work.  At this point in Jesus’ ministry the apostles are truly convinced that Jesus is the Messiah, but apparently they too have notions of a political Messiah.  Jesus begins to tell the apostles about his death, as well as the burdens which they themselves will face.

The highlight of this period of preparation comes when Jesus takes Peter, James, and John to Mount Hermon.  There Jesus is transfigured.  In what is evidently more than a mere vision, Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus as representatives of the law and the prophets.

Even with this demonstration to the inner three, and despite Jesus’ warning about humility in the use of their miraculous power, it is not long before all the disciples begin to dispute among themselves as to who among them is the greatest.  Jesus sets a young child before them as an example of humility and teaches them about temptation, discipline, and forgiveness.”
