“It is apparently during the very early years of Joash’s reign as a child-king that a great disaster befalls Judah. Although the people have previously experienced threats from invading armies, they are evidently not prepared for the army of locusts which swarms over Judah, completely devastating crops and food supplies. The prophet Joel vividly describes another invasion which is to come.
Joel warns a spiritually ambivalent Judah that anything less than total devotion to the one true God will result in punishment.
He further warns that the day of the Lord is coming, when God will bring all mankind to an ultimate accounting for their lives and deeds.
Joel urges the people to pray, to fast, and to repent in order to stay God’s judgment.”

“Due to unusual circumstances, Judah will soon have its first child-king. This occurs when Jehoram’s widow, Athaliah, rises to power in a way that would have pleased her mother, Jezebel: she kills all the royal offspring, including her own. However, one child, Joash, has been saved and hidden. At the age of seven he is presented to the people as king by Jehoiada the priest.
As he comes of age, Joash brings credit to his rule by ordering repairs of the once-beautiful temple of Solomon, then later discredits himself by accepting paganism along with the others who ignore the prophecy of Joel.”
