Steal my show!

“The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.”   Proverbs 16:9

Isn’t it amazing how God tries to get our attention?  I was looking for the iPad this morning to use while I ran.  That is the ONLY way to do it, I tell you!!  It’s so much easier to face treadmill torture when I’m able to distract myself with a show on Netflix.  But this morning the iPad was gone.  It wasn’t charging…wasn’t in it’s place and because I had gotten up a little later, I didn’t have the time to look for it.

So I grabbed my phone and my earbuds and headed downstairs to do my running to music.

God moved that iPad.

Have you ever had Him grab hold of your heart through a song??

I.LOVE.THAT!

Although it’s much more thrilling when you’re standing on a large rubber belt strapped around a set of motorized pulleys and gears moving at break-neck speeds!treadmill

Ok, I’ll come clean; it’s not so break-neck…only 6 mph, but it still makes things very exciting when God uses the dropped beat and swirling rhythms pulsing through the earbuds to literally take your breath away.

I felt every word of tobyMac‘s song “Steal My Show” this morning.

I want that.

I want to give God center stage in my life’s production.  I long for Him to be the director, playwrite, choreographer, costume designer and ticketing agent.

To allow Him to use me in any way He wants.  To place the people in my life He wants me to minister to.  To release my grip, take a step back, watch Him work and be ok whatever the outcome.

God used tobyMac’s words to land squarely on my chest to knock me off balance.

If you wanna steal my show, I’ll sit back and watch you go
If you got somethin’ to say, go on and take it away
Need you to steal my show, can’t wait to watch you go-o-o-o
So take it away…

For it’s when we’re knocked off balance that He can be seen.

“And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”   2 Corinthians 12:9

Oh God, give me the words to say and the steps to take.  I give you control…my hands are outstretched and open.  Please use me.  Show me how to behave, teach me Your ways, allow me to see You at all times and trust You in every moment.

The company I work for has an AMAZING Christmas party every year for its employees.  The doctors seriously go above and beyond to give us the best experience…from where it’s held, to the food and drinks served, to the entertainment, even to the gifts (or prizes) given.

2011 was no exception.

There were over 130 prizes available ranging from big screen tv’s and the latest electronics, to $25 gift cards and everything in between!!  Granted, there are several hundred employees, so the chances (although not bad odds) are pretty slim in getting the prize you really want.  Especially for those of us who don’t win anything.

Ever.

Not even for a free Pepsi in those twist off cap games, or a stinkin’ pie in the McDonald’s monopoly game, or even the highest % off coupon at Kohl’s.  What is that?!!

just not a winner

In anticipation of the party that year employees were given a glimpse to what might be available for prizes and the one thing I saw, just like the year before, that I really wanted was an Apple iPad.  I absolutely do not need one and there was no way we would EVER spend the money or even be able to afford one ourselves.  So I continued to pray each year that if it be in God’s will, He would allow me to win.

For the 2010 Christmas party, I asked my Mom to pray and her response was “No, you don’t pray like that.”  But the more I bugged her about it, she finally gave in and said…“well, maybe a little prayer.”

I didn’t win.

gosh darn it

Then for the 2011 party I asked her to pray again and she said…  “I think we tried this last year and you didn’t get any of the big prizes.  So, probably not supposed to pray for good Christmas presents.  I suggest we just keep the fingers and toes crossed this year.”

The only thing that entered my mind at that moment was the truth from the Bible that says we are to pray specifically…

“This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.”  1 John 5:14-15

Now, I know this does not mean that God gives us everything we ask for.  In fact the Bible warns us to be aware of our hearts and motives…

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.”   James 4:3

But I also know that my God wants to bless us abundantly.   He takes great joy in and loves to see us excited, delighted, and overwhelmed by Him.

“The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.”    Zephaniah 3:17

So I continued to pray and ask for something frivolous and unnecessary, because my God is great and loving like that.

If it’s part of His ultimate plan, God will give us the desires of our heart…

“Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”   Psalm 37:4

and He longs to thrill us by providing even more than we thought possible…

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us”   Ephesians 3:20

So… how did my Christmas party turn out that year, you ask??

Well, guess what I won?!

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. ”    John 14:12-15

God loves you this much…

“Mom, can I play on the iPad?”  Sydney asked but before I could utter a word, a little voice next to me said “Did Syd read the Bible yet?”  Tristan, who also loves playing on the iPad, looked up from the open Bible in front of him, his question still lingering in the air.

I looked at Syd, my eyebrows raised and my eyes clearly revealing my thoughts, as she stood saying nothing.

At our house the rules for the boys in the morning is that they need to read the Bible first before anything else; tv, video games, movies… and they are very good at getting their reading done.  They don’t read a huge amount, they’re still pretty little, but it started out as a verse in Proverbs and a verse in John (relevant to that day’s date) but now they’re up to five verses in each book.

The girls don’t have the same rules, only because they tend to sleep in a bit later, so they are able to do their quiet time at their convenience.  I know Sam prefers reading at night before bed, but Syd??  Well, apparently I now know the answer.

“Hmmm…” I hummed as I looked at her and with a sigh she sat at the table, opened the Bible and began to read.

“I’m done” she said standing, “now can I play?”

“Already?!!”  I said incredulously, “What did you read?”

Proverbs 11,” she retorted.

“The whole chapter??”

“Mmm-hmm.”

“Syd,” I said “if you want to get to know someone you need to spend time with them.  You talk to them, listen to them and learn about them. This is God,” I said holding out the Bible between us “the Word, THIS Word, is Jesus and you can only get to know Him better by reading it.”

“Why don’t you read the Bible?” I questioned.

She stood in silence, her gaze staring off…far from me.

“Syd,” my voice startled her.  “Why don’t you read?”  I could see the struggle within her about how she should answer.  I encouraged her to be honest, I was only asking why, when she finally sat and said;

“Because it’s boring and confusing.”

“I know, Babe.” I nodded, acknowledging and completely understanding her.  “But,” I said  “if you pay attention and continue reading, God will reveal something to you. Why did you pick Proverbs 11?” I asked

“I don’t know” she said with a shrug.

“Well, then there’s something God wants you to learn if that’s what He had you open.”

We read through the chapter, a wonderful proverb revealing God’s views of righteous living and wisdom.  A great read showing how to live our lives with regards to money, pride, honesty, people, looks, possessions, wisdom… also exposing the fate of choosing the ulterior.

What a perfect chapter for God to lead her to.  A chapter revealing so much truth, so much guidance and insight into how God wants us to live our lives…and it can only be found by reading His Word.

God is not far away.  He has given us an amazing play-book of which to make our decisions and choose our moves.  When we are lost or feeling forgotten, we need to look to Him for guidance through His Word and to those who have gone before us and learned from His teaching.

Pick up your Bible, it’s your move.

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls.”   Proverbs 11:30
