Daniel in the Lions’ Den

“Sometime later during the reign of Darius the Mede, a plot is laid against Daniel by those opposed to his rise to greater power.  The end result is that Daniel is placed in a den of lions but saved from harm by the God to whom he faithfully prays.  The incident allows an interesting insight into Darius, who (at least for a time) is even evangelistic on behalf of this marvelous ‘God of Daniel.'”

“Darius’ enthusiasm for the ‘God of Daniel’ is evidently not long-lived.  There is no evidence that Babylon did in fact turn to God.  On the contrary, it appears that Darius’ character is so unaffected that he betrays his own nation.

So ends the power of the great Babylonian Empire, just as the prophets had foretold.  Never again will it rise to a position of great power.  Concurrent with the change of rule in Babylon, Daniel leaves the palace and his position of governmental prominence, and yet Daniel finds favor under the new Persian government as well.”

The Great Deportation

“Upon the death of his father, eighteen-year-old Jehoiachin ascends the throne of Judah, but he reigns for only three months.  Nebuchadnezzar is not about to allow a second king of Judah to defy him, so he comes to lead the new king away as a captive.

Jehoiachin’s fate is linked to the fate of thousands of God’s people.  There have been many deportations already, and more will follow, but this is to be by far the greatest deportation of them all.  Significant among the royal and priestly captives is a man by the name of Ezekiel, who will soon be called by God to be a prophet among his fellow captives in Babylonia.”

Reign of Zedekiah

“With the great deportation under way and young King Jehoiachin being taken to Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar sets up Jehoiachin’s uncle Mattaniah to be a puppet king.  Nebuchadnezzar calls Mattaniah by the name of Zedekiah, and that is how he will be remembered throughout history.  The 11 years of his reign will come to a disastrous end with the fall of Jerusalem.”

Daniel the Faithful Captive

“Several captives in Babylon are being singled out for duty in the king’s service.  Among those chosen is a young man by the dame of Daniel, who distinguishes himself by refusing to eat food or drink wine from Nebuchadnezzar’s royal table.  For this act of faith Daniel and three others with him are exceptionally blessed by God.  After three years of special training they enter the king’s service and are found to excel in understanding whenever Nebuchadnezzar inquires of them.”

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream

“It is apparently not long after he has entered the king’s service that Daniel is elevated to a high position in Nebuchadnezzar’s palace as a result of his identifying and interpreting a dream.  When Daniel learns of the dream, he seizes the occasion as an opportunity to glorify God, and volunteers to tell the king of the dream and its meaning.

Here is the account of this marvelous foretelling of events to take place in centuries to come.”

“Nebuchadnezzar is impressed, but he is still not a full believer in the true God.  Nor is he going to relent in his oppression of Daniel’s kinsmen.  Furthermore it does not appear that Daniel’s high position in Babylon enables him to speak forcefully on behalf of his fellow countrymen, because the historical record now reflects further deportations from Judah to Babylonia.”
