Conquering a Land   (Ca. 1400-1100 B.C.)

Renewal of the Covenant

“With this restatement of the laws completed, it is an appropriate time for the Israelites to reaffirm their covenant with God.  It is not a covenant to be taken lightly, for along with God’s promised blessings go the promised curses which will be imposed for breach of the covenant.  Breach of the covenant will occur when breach of the laws occurs; and breach of the law can easily occur, for the law handed down from God through Moses is the most comprehensive, radically different, and morally demanding law that any nation of people has seen to this time.”

Read Exodus chapters 29, 30, 31

“The remarkable detailed instructions indicate how strongly God feels about the purity of his people, and makes a strong statement about how specifically God is involved in their lives and what great expectations he has for precise obedience to whatever commands he gives.

But the tabernacle is more than just a temporary place for the Israelites to worship God: it foreshadows a more permanent temple to be built in future years, and later a spiritual temple to be known as the church.

The atonement cover above the ark suggests the grace which will be given to cover all law.

The blood of the animal sacrifice looks forward to a future time when the Messiah will be slain as the Lamb of God.

The veil which separates man from God will one day be torn apart by this spiritual High Priest who will enter that Most Holy Place — heaven itself — and there atone for the sins of all mankind.

And all who believe in God and obey the laws of his covenant will become as priests, wearing the priestly garments of righteous character and offering up their very lives to God’s service.”

The Israelites Covenant with God

“The time to fulfill God’s promise has come, and God approaches the Israelites to covenant with them as his special people.  It soon becomes clear that they have not anticipated the full impact of their part of the covenant.  In agreeing to covenant, the people will be pledging their faith and allegiance to an invisible king, their very Creator and promising to obey the many stringent laws which are part of the covenant.”

Read Exodus 19 and 20

“The Exodus record lists the first of many laws which God will set forth for his people to follow.  The nation of Israel is to be a theocracy, under the direct rule of God himself; the Israelites will be governed by divine laws which they must observe in keeping with the very covenant which they are now making with God.

The ten commandments form the constitutional framework for all other laws which follow; laws relating to crimes against persons and property to other offenses, punishable by death, such as sorcery, bestiality, and idolatry.

So as to avoid the repetition found in the records of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, all the laws will be presented later in a single collection organized by subject.  Now, however, attention turns back to God’s final instructions and the promises which he makes as his part of the covenant with the people of Israel.”
