War Between Syria, Israel, and Judah

“This shocking turn of events causes both Israel and Syria to fear the Assyrians.  They draw together in an unusual alliance and even call upon Judah to join them.  When Judah refuses to become involved, Syria and Israel turn against Judah in an effort to force her support.”

“Isaiah’s message began with a condemnation of Judah’s many sins.  He insisted that Judah’s sins will ring severe punishment, from which neither Judah’s idols nor its leaders can save the people.  he challenges the people to come to their senses before it is too late, and to look forward to the last days, when there will be a spiritual renewal and everlasting peace.”

Era of Uzziah and Jotham in Judah

“King Uzziah, also known as Azariah, has reigned over Judah with great success.  But his good fortune is about to go to his head, and he will suffer serious illness for his presumptuousness.  Uzziah’s illness will necessitate a co-regent to run the day-to-day affairs of state.  Uzziah’s son Jotham is a good leader, but he is not the religious man needed by this materialistic, immoral, unjust, and complacent people.”

“When Hosea’s wife, Gomer, consorts with other lovers, she only typifies Israel’s unfaithfulness in playing the harlot with other gods.  And yet, as always, God speaks a message of hope through Hosea.  Just as Hosea redeems Gomer from literal slavery, God stands ready to redeem his people from sin.  And yet this time God will not renew his love so easily as he has in the past.  This time Israel will know real suffering and discipline before being restored to God’s love and favor.”
