“If God and his servant jeremiah are outraged against false prophets, their fierce chastisement is only a warm-up for the judgment that Jeremiah will bring against Babylonia.  Prophets down through the years have brought many judgments against Babylonia, but none is more specific than Jeremiah’s.

With Babylonia now a real threat, the time is ripe to reassure Judah of the ultimate fate of its oppressor.  Of all the people who need this assurance, it is the exiles in Babylonia who need it the most.  Therefore this judgment against Babylon is given by Jeremiah to a staff officer named Seraiah, who is being sent to Babylon on behalf of King Zedekiah.”
