B. Dietary Regulations

“Animals are divided into categories of ‘clean’ and ‘unclean,’ indicating whether or not it is acceptable for the Israelites to eat them.  A creature may be ‘unclean’ because it has unsanitary contact with that which is putrefied; because it is associated with objectionable living habits; because it is unhealthful for human consumption; or perhaps because it is a creature typically used in pagan worship.  The eating of blood is particularly prohibited because blood represents all life, and because it is used to seek atonement for sin.”
